Part of PBS website. SUPER WHY is a breakthrough preschool series designed to help kids ages 3 to 6 with the critical skills that they need to learn to read (and love to read!) as recommended by the National Reading Panel. Its goal is to give every child watching SUPER WHY the tools and the desire to read. By using relatable characters, familiar stories, interactive games, humor, and a sense of adventure in each story, they encourage kids to approach the literacy curriculum in an engaging way. SUPER WHY exposes viewers to important elements of literacy: stories, characters, language development, vocabulary, letter identification, letter sounds, rhyming, word families, comprehension, and text. The foundation of the curriculum is that through interactivity and practice, preschoolers will learn to read and love to read.

In this section of the acclaimed site, children go further than the ABC to learn new sounds. Each row features one vowel sound. Children listen to, manipulate, read, and eventually master this sound-spelling through a variety of books and games before moving on to the next row. This is systematic, sequential phonics and is recommended by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
